Raising Chickens - the Beginning of Our Journey
The Story:
Starting around 2017 my sister and I helped with the daily chores at the Yetsko farm two blocks from our house. The farm was established in 1855, and has been designated a century farm by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture. We still help out with baling hay and any other tasks they need help with. The Yetskos are also the ones who started our chicken journey.
One day in early 2021, we were feeding their flock of twenty some chickens, and honestly, I don’t know why or how we got talking about how easy it is to raise chickens. At some point they told us we could get chickens and it would be easy to raise them.
When my sister and I arrived back at our house, our father was outside, so we told him about what the Yetskos were telling us – how easy it would be to raise chickens, and how it would save money on eggs, which at the time were cheap compared to now.
We knew that our father wouldn’t be opposed, and that as long as they produced something we could use, he would be fine with the idea. So it wasn't him we’d have to convince, it was our mother. Now our mother isn’t big into animals, so instead of just saying, “oh, we should get chickens,” which would sound kind of lame, we wrote a couple paragraphs as to why we should get chickens.
Since we are home
schooled, we can have pretty much anything count as school, so our
mother’s reply was we could get chickens if, we did a research
paper on what kind of chicken to get, where to get them, what we
needed to raise them, and problems that could arise.
And so began the great chicken journey who’s legacy continues to this day.
